Árborg, Iceland, Jan. 2017—Alphonse Gabriel "Al" Capone was the king of Chicago mafia gangsters. Money, booze, fast cars, women—he had it all.
Drunk and feeling a small sense of kindred spirit with the notorious crime boss, in 1966, four Árborg residents decided on a yearly celebration of all things "Scarface". By 1974 the entire town had joined in the festivities.
Forty three years later, the now multi-day event continues to grow.
Join us January 15 – 17, 2017 for this year's "Al Capone Day". Dress up in traditional gangster attire, eat, smoke and drink as much as you please, and watch out for G-men. Keep it classy!
Iceland's only "Chicago Jazz" quartet keeps the party hoppin' all three days with classics from the Swing Era.
You'll hear them at various outdoor events during the day, and at night, you can find them at Bar Skaulin. They're sure to make you want shimmy!
To celebrate "Al Capone Day", each year, many of Árborg's bars and restaurants feature themed menu items and daily specials.
Here are a couple highlights:
The city's oldest "speakeasy", where it all began! In 1966, four friends sitting at the bar made a toast to Al Capone and the rest is history. Order up a "South Side" or a Templeton Rye™—some say each was Capone's drink of choice (you decide). Damn it feels good to be a gangster!
Restaurant owner Per Brekke travelled all the way to Chicago a few years ago to learn the secret behind authentic deep dish pizza. The only place in Árborg where it's served, handmade and fresh!
